A question of good taste. And patina.
In fact, this collaboration is a small declaration of love for things that stand the test of time. Whilst the fashion industry is churning out new must-haves at an ever-faster pace, A.P.C. and Barbour are focusing on the exact opposite: garments that don’t have to disappear after just one season.
As well as waxed jackets, the collection includes denim, knitwear, shirts and a whole range of accessories. Traditional tartan patterns feature as linings, on trouser waistbands or on bags. Added to this are wellies, clogs, caps and bags that straddle the line between British country life and French city life.
Of course, this is yet another new collection that’s there to be bought. But at least it’s one whose design philosophy isn’t based on being replaced by the next collection as quickly as possible.
And perhaps that is precisely where its appeal lies. Barbour brings the history, A.P.C. the present. Both eschew unnecessary spectacle, preferring to let the materials, cuts and craftsmanship speak for themselves.
The new A.P.C. × Barbour collection is now available online and in selected stores. And, incidentally, it proves that you don’t necessarily have to break the rules to achieve a successful stylistic shift. Sometimes it’s enough to interpret them with a slightly more French twist.
Très British. Très bien.
