Tobias Vogel has been publishing his stick figure drawings under the pseudonym Krieg und Freitag since 2017, initially on social media and later also in print, with exhibitions and live shows. And to think that Vogel never showed any real passion for drawing when he was young. On the contrary, he wrote short stories and poems as a child and dreamed of becoming a writer. After school, he first trained as a foreign language assistant and then worked as a customer advisor for a health insurance provider. In his mid-thirties, he taught himself how to draw with the help of a book, posted his first cartoon on Twitter and saw his fan base grow steadily over the following years. Vogel also does political campaigns. Recently, he collected donations for a “stick figure protest” against Nazis, where he would draw one stick figure for a donation of five euros. In the end he raised €64,480. We didn’t have a long conversation with Tobias Vogel – that wouldn’t have seemed appropriate anyway – but sent him a series of questions that he answered in his typical manner: briefly and to the point
