250 GT Berlinetta

If there is a perfect road racing car from the late 1950s, it is the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta “passo corto”, which means “short wheelbase”. If the lucky owners want to race with it, they only have to make a few minor modifications to the car.

Ricardo Rodríguez from Mexico is one of the youngest ever starters in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Together with his brother Pedro, he has been driving long-distance races since the early 1960s.

Put on racing tires, mount roll bars, screw in low-temperature spark plugs – and the race car is ready. What Ferrari presents at the 1959 Paris Motor Show is automotive eroticism, power and pure speed. The two seater in the Competizione version (about 45 units) weighs less than a ton (thanks in part to an aluminum body) and is powered by a 12-cylinder engine that produces 280 hp. The three-liter Colombo engine is equipped with one overhead camshaft per cylinder bank; three Weber dual carburetors are responsible for the optimal mixture. Power is transmitted to the rigid rear axle via a synchronized four-speed transmission.

With 268 km/h, the racer is at the front of the pack – and decelerates excellently, because the 250 GT Berlinetta SWB is the first Ferrari to be equipped with disc brakes as standard. The design is changed slightly from time to time during the construction period, but only connoisseurs will notice. On the track, the SWB is at least as successful as its long-wheelbase counterpart. From 1960 to 1962, the 250 GT Berlinetta passo corte was victorious in the Tour de France Automobile, and in 1960 and 1961, the drivers were at the top of the podium at the Tourist Trophy in Goodwood. The model also won the GT classification at Le Mans in 1960 and 1961, and the 1,000-kilometer race at the Nürburgring in 1961 and 1962.
