Road Racer: Porsche 963 RSP

A Le Mans racing car for the road? This is exactly what Porsche has now realized with the 963 RSP - a one-off with a great history, sharp design and a clear goal: to bring together the best of motorsport and craftsmanship.

Porsche has always stood for the combination of racing and road vehicles. The new Porsche 963 RSP continues this tradition - and sets new standards. As a one-off, it picks up on the DNA of the legendary Count Rossi 917 and brings it into the present day. Painted in “Martini Silver” and road-legal, the 963 RSP shows how uncompromising performance and timeless aesthetics can be combined on public roads. We take a look at five key facts.

A tribute on wheels

The 963 RSP is inspired by the Count Rossi 917 - the road-legal Porsche racing car that rolled from Zuffenhausen to Paris in 1975. The RSP was also adapted for road use - with modified damping, increased ground clearance, adapted lighting systems and even a horn.

Caution, freshly painted

Careful, freshly paintedIn contrast to the wrapped racing cars from the WEC and IMSA, the 963 RSP is completely painted - in exactly the same color as the Porsche 917 50 years ago: “Martini Silver”. And yes, painting a carbon body like this is a challenge in itself. The exterior was refined with carbon and Kevlar elements, 3D-printed type lettering and historic Michelin lettering on the tires.

Interior with character

The cockpit shows: Even a racing car can and should be comfortable. At least as a one-off. Light brown leather, Alcantara, a leather-covered steering wheel and a thermal cup holder meet racing technology - including an air-conditioned carbon seat. Small design references to the 917 - such as the air vents - round off the overall picture.

Heart of the motorsport

The 963 RSP is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 biturbo with around 680 hp. Known internally as the 9RD, the engine is based on the power unit of the 918 Spyder, which in turn inherited it from the successful RS Spyder. And this also competed under the Penske flag in a US racing series known at the time as the “ALMS”. An electric motor supplements the familiar but very powerful engine, the hybrid system delivers up to an additional 50 kW and works with 800-volt technology.

Exclusivity on wheels

The 963 RSP remains a one-off - built exclusively for Roger S. Penske, motorsport legend and long-standing Porsche partner. The abbreviation “RSP” refers to the American, who races the 963 race cars with his team in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and its US counterpart, the IMSA.

Equipped with a matching helmet and Snap-On toolbox, the car will be exhibited at selected events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Goodwood Festival of Speed before moving into the Porsche Museum.
