Watch special 2026

Porsche Design: Swiss watch movement

A true icon never runs out of good stories. Instead, it constantly adds new chapters, as Porsche Design is now doing with the Chronograph 1 – All Titanium Numbered Edition. And as if this story wasn't already good enough, the lifestyle offshoot of Porsche has started a whole new book with the Timepieces Manufaktur in Grenchen.

How do you develop a design classic? A recourse to the design philosophy of Prof. F.A. Porsche is anything but wrong in this context. The following sentence is most frequently quoted from him: "If you think about the function of a thing, the form sometimes emerges by itself." Now it's best to close your eyes and see what? A Porsche 911. Developed from the basic idea of combining performance, functionality and elegance in a sports car.

These are timeless principles that F.A. Porsche himself transferred to the world of watches in 1972. The Chronograph I, inspired by the dashboard in the Porsche 911, was the first completely black timepiece. It broke with established conventions and set a new standard in function and aesthetics. The first Porsche for the wrist, so to speak. A timeless icon. Followed by numerous others to this day. For example, when F. A. Porsche combined the deep black dial with a brushed, uncoated stainless steel case three years later, whose matt surface minimised reflections - functionally elegant, functional, striking and robust.

Which brings us to the Chronograph 1 - All Titanium Numbered Edition, which was unveiled at the beginning of April.

It continues this legacy with a bead-blasted, matt-finished case case that brings out the timeless beauty of uncoated titanium. brings out the timeless beauty of uncoated titanium. The bead-blasted titanium bracelet and titanium titanium bracelet with a titanium folding clasp with fine adjustment. The timepiece timepiece incidentally builds a bridge to another milestone in the history of in the history of Porsche Design: the first watch made entirely of titanium watch made entirely from titanium in 1980.

Combining two icons of the brand's history in one new model model fits perfectly into the here and now of Porsche Design. Porsche Design. Because in March, the company in the Swiss town of Grenchen opened its Timepieces Manufaktur in March. Three years of planning, eighteen months of remodelling and, as a result, a centre of excellence that represents the next stage of development for the company development stage in the production of exclusive mechanical timepieces and the company's own quality standards even more firmly in the world of watches. anchored in the watch world.

"Design is not an end in itself, but must be explained from a functional point of view."
F.A. Porsche
First impression: A wonderful success. Especially with the Chronograph 1 - All Titanium Numbered Edition. It is the second edition of the Porsche Design classic made from uncoated titanium, which is available to buy. In combination with the titanium case, the matt black dial with high-contrast white numerals and indices ensures intuitive readability from any angle. The newly designed minute hand with its distinctive tip points precisely to the external minute track, while the tachymeter scale on the black rehaut emphasises the instrumental character of the watch. A bilingual weekday and date display (German/English) is also on board. The hard-coated sapphire crystal with multiple anti-reflective coatings on both sides also contributes to the excellent readability.

The new edition is being released in a limited series of a maximum of 1,000 watches per year. The consecutive numbering on the back of the case makes each watch unique. Orlando Bloom, a Porsche enthusiast and brand ambassador, is already wearing one of them. The Hollywood star acts less as a classic testimonial, but as part of an extended brand image that operates between design, technology and pop culture.

The actor is known for preparing intensively for his roles. Most recently, he lost a whole 24 kilos for his role as a boxer in "The Cut". His role as a brand ambassador for Porsche Design is just as important to him - as he recently proved with his own exclusive sunglasses collection – and also as the face of the campaign for the Chronograph 1 - All Titanium Numbered Edition.

And while the industry is still gathering in Geneva for Watches and Wonders, the next trends are already emerging around 170 kilometres away in Grenchen – at their own pace.
