Road to America

For the IMSA race at Road America in Wisconsin, Porsche and Penske Motorsport are fielding two Porsche 963s, whose special liveries pay tribute to two of the brand’s greatest successes in North America.

The Formula 1 technical regulations now run to more than 100 pages and govern, amongst other things, the positioning of the driver’s feet. The Can-Am series once proved that things could be done differently. The North American racing series, which ran from 1966 to 1974, produced some of the most radical racing cars in motorsport history with surprisingly few restrictions. Porsche and Team Penske are now paying tribute to one of these with a special design – whilst a second design commemorates a legendary Porsche victory from 2007.

At the 1973 Can-Am race at Road America, Mark Donohue dominated in the Sunoco Porsche 917/30 for Team Penske. What’s more, he won nine races in a row that season – and, in qualifying at Road America, became the first driver ever to lap the circuit in under two minutes, more than three seconds ahead of his nearest rival. The 917/30 is still regarded as the ‘most powerful racing car of all time’: its 12-cylinder V-turbo engine produced 882 kW (1,200 PS).
Around 30 years later, back at Road America: Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas triumphed in the 4-hour race with their 775-kilogram Porsche RS Spyder, beating the nominally more powerful LMP1 race cars – the first overall victory for an LMP2 car in the American Le Mans Series. By the end, they had secured three manufacturers’ championships as well as three drivers’ and three teams’ titles each.

2026. Anticipation is building for the next race weekend at Road America. The 6.515-kilometre circuit in Wisconsin, with its 14 corners, is one of the most popular tracks for many drivers – and with 17 overall victories to date, Porsche is also the most successful manufacturer there.

From 30 July to 2 August, Porsche and Team Penske will be competing there with two Porsche 963s featuring different liveries: Car number 6 in the Sunoco colours of the 917/30, and car number 7 in the yellow livery of the RS Spyder.

It is a special year for both sides – Porsche is celebrating 75 years in motorsport, whilst Team Penske is marking its 60th anniversary. And for the first time, the IMSA race, which now runs for six hours, forms part of the Michelin Endurance Cup.
