The tyre knows everything

In good thrillers, the most inconspicuous character is often the decisive one. Pirelli has moulded this principle into rubber: The Cyber Tyre listens to the road, reports in real time and passes its findings directly to the vehicle. This was demonstrated on a road trip from Modena to Milan – with a diversion via Stuttgart.

According to the route planner, it is 224 kilometres from the Pagani headquarters in Modena to Pirelli in Milan. In special cases, however, a small diversions is also possible. As in the case of the maiden voyage of the Pirelli Cyber Tyre technology. The main reason for this change of plan from our point of view is, of course, the Pagani Utopia Roadster. The arguments: 864 hp from a 6.0-litre V12 biturbo, a torque of 1,100 Nm, a top speed of 350 km/h – and, above all, manual transmission. Officially, the companies involved simply wanted to demonstrate what the Pirelli Cyber Tyre is capable of with a road trip.

In fact, it makes sense to travel more than a thousand kilometres to visit the colleagues at Bosch Engineering. After all, they played a key role in the development of the system. And on the way to Abstatt, north of Stuttgart, there are plenty of winding Alpine roads and speed-limit-free German motorways for the Utopia Roadster.

And why is the Cyber Tyre now called the Cyber Tyre? In this system, the tyre is transformed from a passive component into an active sensor. It records data on road conditions and tyre behaviour in real time and feeds this directly into the vehicle dynamics control system. ABS, ESP and traction control thus receive more precise input values and can react more quickly. The primary goal is greater driving safety.

For another field of application, German motorway German motorway operators should listen carefully: Pirelli is already using Cyber Tyre on the Italian motorway network to detect road damage at an early stage and enable enable predictive maintenance. Which in turn benefits the drivers of the Pagani Utopia Roadster. And in the near future not only them: Pirelli is planning to expand to other vehicles in the premium and prestige class. prestige class. At the same time, the company is working on a sensor fusion technology that bundles additional sensor data and thus creates the basis for advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving.

Series production of the Cyber Tyre System will start soon – at the Pirelli plant in Rome, Georgia, USA, which specialises in the production of high-quality tyres and motorsport products. And that sounds quite tempting.
