365 GT4 2+2: unpretentiously powerful

Sometimes you have to break with tradition – as Pininfarina did when designing the 365 GT4 2+2. It no longer has the classic lines of the 365 GT 2+2 from 1967 and off’ers significantly more space than the GTC/4 from 1970.

With a wheelbase of 2,700 millimeters, it’s also good to be at the back – especially when you’re sitting in a Ferrari. Otherwise, however, the chassis is almost identical to that of its predecessor, the 365 GTC/4, except
for the wider rear track. The design appears rather conservative with the large smooth surfaces and lots of glass. At most, only the large hood, perhaps the retractable headlights, various Ferrari badges and the quadruple tailpipes of the exhaust system hint at the car’s true sportiness. But they are also necessary, because the four-seater is powered by the 320-hp 4.4-liter V12 engine from the 365 GTC/4.

Because of the strict licensing rules in North America, Ferrari does not build a US version of this model for the important export market. 521 units plus three prototypes are produced. In 1976, Ferrari follows this up with another version, the 400 GT. The engine of the same strength now has a displacement of 4,832 cc. In addition, for the first time at Ferrari, there is a three-speed automatic transmission from General Motors. Incidentally, the 400 is the last front-mounted twelve-cylinder engine from Ferrari to be powered by carburetors.
