Audi's long motorsport history took off, especially in the 1930s with the Silver Arrows: Grand Prix races and ever new speed records thrilled the media and the public alike. In Germany, a competition between brands, drivers and technical concepts developed over the years – star versus four rings, Caracciola and von Brauchitsch versus Stuck and Rosemeyer, front-engine versus mid-engine.
Based on the "Auto Union Type A", the engineers at Audi developed the first streamlined model with 375 hp. The ideal route for the test drive with the record chase was finally found between Pescia and Altopascio near Lucca on the Florence-Viareggio road: well levelled, asphalted with good grip, eight metres wide and almost dead straight for around five kilometres.
