The Savage Friend: Chevrolet Camaro 350 Rally Sport

Five wild years in the life of a ­Chevrolet Camaro 350 Rally Sport. A letter from the original owner tells us more. Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a wild ride!

Armin had really outdone himself this time. The owner of several highly exclusive vehicles who occasionally makes them available to us for a good story asked if we wanted to drive another of his muscle cars, for example the Chevrolet Camaro 350 Rally Sport. What a question! So we saddled up the chickens, as we say in these parts, and made our way over to his place. But the key and the papers weren’t everything Armin gave us. He was also holding an envelope in his hands, inserted into a transparent plastic sleeve. Inside were five folded letter-size pages. Handwritten in clearly legible English forty-nine years ago by the first American owner. Better than any test report we’ve ever written (thanks for the compliment). He didn’t reveal anything else. Only that he himself had bought the car in a wretched condition from a guy in the Netherlands and that he had carried out a full restoration. The Dutchman had brought the car over to Europe from across the pond. The exact number of previous owners is unknown.

First thing we did was drive the Camaro to a nearby bakery, where we went in, ordered black coffee and pored over the letter. Ballpoint pen with blue lettering. We read it twice. We had never seen anything like it before. We just knew we had to print it. Here it is, in full.

Hi!

My name is Trevor Coleman. I hereby offer my congratulations. The Camaro will give you joy to no end. You’ve most likely found this letter in the glove compartment. If you ever sell the car, as I did, be sure to leave the letter there when you do. It is my express wish that the next owner (and who knows how many more) will be able to read it. I want this Camaro to have a story that will be told on and on. If you crash it into a retaining wall – and believe me, that’s easy to do with this car, and you shouldn’t feel ashamed – and you can’t find anybody who will take the old heap of junk off your hands, then you’re free to take this letter and cherish it elsewhere. Provided you’ve survived.


But let’s start from the beginning: I’m from Wyoming. Everyone in our family is a rancher. My father owns the biggest cattle herds of all the Colemans. I grew up on a ranch outside of Cheyenne, where I rode the bus into town every morning, always accompanied by my two best friends, Andy Barnett and Elliott Perkins. Andy’s dad has even more cattle than my dad, and Elliott’s dad has more cattle than Andy’s dad. In town we had to walk another five minutes from the bus stop to our school, past Frank Palania’s garage. Frank Palania was in his late thirties and owned a Pontiac GTO. When he started it up, it shook half of Cheyenne, and everyone knew who was king of the proverbial hill. He never drove it out on the road, however, only in amateur races on dusty circuits. Do you know the story behind the GTO? Pontiac could only call it that because the Italians, probably drunk on red wine, had forgotten to patent the three letters GTO for Gran Turismo Omologato. I would have loved to have been there when good ol’ Enzo found out that an American chariot costing just a few lousy thousand dollars had the same name as his famous Ferrari GTO.


If you try to fight the chassis of a muscle car, you’ll fly off. That’s exactly what makes these cars so ­fascinating for me.

One day in 1964, the sound of the engine coming from the garage drew us in and we ventured inside. Palania was a nice, extremely uncomplicated guy. He let us sit in the Pontiac and hold the steering wheel so we could imagine what it must feel like going full throttle. From then on, we were regular guests in Palania’s garage. Once he even took us to a race. He didn’t seem to be a good racer, often spun out and miscalculated his braking times. But that didn’t matter to us, all we cared about was fast cars and motorsport. Baseball? Forget it! Then, in early 1966, Frank Palania just up and vanished, leaving the garage empty down to the last wrench. Supposedly he owed Uncle Sam a bunch of back taxes.
