"Best of Show": BMW 328 "Bügelfalte" from 1937
The fact that the BMW 328 "Bügelfalte" was chosen is hardly surprising to connoisseurs: the streamlined one-off is considered one of the most exciting racing cars of the pre-war era. Built in May 1937 for the BMW development department, chassis 85032 was a works car at Le Mans and the Tourist Trophy. In autumn 1939, the racing department completely dismantled it and rebuilt it for the 1940 Mille Miglia – equipped with an open, streamlined body, reduced to 725 kilograms in weight and increased in power from 80 to 130 hp. Thus the car combined radical aerodynamics with consistent lightweight construction – and thus became the model for modern sports cars. Incidentally, the racing car owes its name to the striking sheet metal edge on the front wings.
On Sunday evening, owner Stefano Martinoli was presented with the prestigious "Trofeo BMW Group – Best of Show" award. In addition to the award, there was also a specially created watch from A. Lange & Söhne: the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH in 18-carat white gold with a solid red gold dial and the hand-engraved coat of arms of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on the hinged back.
