Unlocking and pulling over: Facts & figures about the Targa

For more than six decades, the 911 Targa has retained its distinctive character. Today, the roof section can be opened and closed at the touch of a button – in the past, this was done entirely by hand. This was, of course, described in detail in the owner’s manual. But the advertising experts back then had their own ideas.

Four Steps to Open-Air Enjoyment

The folding roof is mounted at the back with two pins on the roll bar and locked at the front with two latches on the windshield frame. According to the owner’s manual, it can be removed easily at any time. Here’s how:

Fingerprints

Actually were a topic of discussion with respect to the Targa’s stainless steel roll bar. One Targa owner asked in Porsche’s Christophorus magazinewhether they could be washed off with dishwashing liquid.

Spider

That’s what the delicate, foldable Targa roof frame of the first 911 generation through the 964 was called. It was made of lightweight magnesium, which can only be processed in a protective atmosphere as it is extremely flammable in liquid form.

Stop! Police!

The 100,000th Porsche sports car was a 912 Targa. That was in 1966. But it didn’t go to a private customer – it went to the state of Baden-Württemberg, as a police car with a blue light on the roll bar. It was also the 125th Porsche to serve in a police force.

Fit for a museum

Only one prototype of the 924 Targa was ever built, in 1979 – high tooling costs and insufficient body rigidity meant it never went into production. Today the one and only example is on display at the Porsche Museum.
