”New York: 1981 to the present day”

Most people are likely to know Michael Souvignier from his films such as ”The Miracle of Lengede” or ”Contergan”. But before he became a director and film producer, he worked as a photographer. He discovered his passion for photography on a trip to New York in 1981, when the first art galleries were full of it. He is now dedicating an exhibition to his favourite city: “New York 1981 to the present day”.

For more than 45 years now, Michael Souvignier has been capturing his favourite city, New York, and the changes it has undergone through his camera lens. In doing so, he combines the photographer’s precise eye with his experience as a filmmaker who thinks in images, sequences and stories. A long-term project.

The result: a deeply personal portrait of the city, which appears at times vibrant, at times contradictory, but always in motion.

The opening will take place on 3 September 2026 at 7.00 pm at the Geuer & Geuer Art Foundation in Düsseldorf.
