Weightless

Since 1955, Alpine has been guided by a simple idea: less weight, more driving pleasure. In an immersive exhibition at the Phoenix des Lumières in Dortmund, the brand has now shown what lightness feels like today. We took a look at the answer.

Good exhibitions do not simply showcase products. They tell stories. Or, to be more precise: they transform information into atmosphere, spaces into experiences and brands into narratives. This is precisely why exhibitions continue to work so well to this day. They do not merely explain; they bring meaning to life. In doing so, visitors move not only through spaces, but through thoughts, memories and carefully curated visual worlds. At its best, this gives rise to something that has become rare today: genuine attention.

Exhibitions work differently to advertising. More slowly, more spatially and more physically. You walk through them, discover connections for yourself, link objects with emotions and sound with atmosphere. Good exhibitions therefore never tell a story in a linear way. They work more like a film: with dramatic structure, shifts in perspective, arcs of tension and transitions. That is why the format suits a brand like Alpine so well.

Since its foundation in 1955, the brand has embodied a very French idea of sportiness. Less muscle-flexing, more lightness. Less brute force, more sense of balance. Speed not as an act of violence, but as an elegant form of control. At the Phoenix des Lumières in Dortmund, Alpine has now translated this idea into an immersive exhibition – and in doing so has done something interesting: the brand didn’t simply showcase its history; it made its way of thinking tangibly experiential.

The first thing you noticed was blue. Not just any blue, but that cool, metallic Alpine Blue that has been part of the brand’s visual DNA for decades. Light projections swept across walls and floors, historic racing scenes merged with digital animations, and technical drawings overlapped with current models. Past and present blurred into a single narrative, all set to music. Visitors found themselves moving not so much through a traditional motor show as through a spatial brand experience. In a digital age where images are constantly scrolling by, physical spaces once again create something special: presence, attention, memory. This is precisely why exhibitions are once again becoming so relevant as a medium.

Good exhibitions never tell a story in a linear way.
They work more like a film: with dramatic structure, shifts in perspective, build-up of tension and transitions.

The entire exhibition was developed by Super Bonfire Germany in collaboration with Alpine Germany. Six vehicle displays, a History Cube, an Infinity Room and wraparound projections condensed seventy years of brand history into a spatial narrative. Everything was guided by a clear concept: lightness. A word that takes on an almost philosophical resonance at Alpine – because here it does not merely refer to weight. It describes a way of thinking about cars: a combination of history and electromobility, always characterised by lightness.

This idea was shaped by the company’s founder, Jean Rédélé. The Renault dealer from Dieppe began experimenting early on with lightweight, agile vehicles for motorsport. It was on the winding Alpine roads that the name ‘Alpine’ was eventually coined. Rédélé’s philosophy was ahead of its time: less mass, more driving pleasure. One of his quotes was on display in the exhibition: “I wanted customers to experience that captivating sense of control.” That is what this is all about – not nostalgia, but the driving experience.

The exhibition traced this development chronologically, without ever feeling like a museum display. Historical photographs, film clips and technical illustrations were interspersed with spatial installations. Images of motorsport appeared time and again: the legendary A110 on gravel tracks, mechanics in blue overalls, plumes of dust in tight bends. Monte Carlo 1971. World Rally Championship 1973. Le Mans 1978. Alpine does not tell a traditional ‘horsepower’ story. The brand tells the story of intelligent speed. Whilst many sports car brands focus on size and power, Alpine remains steadfastly committed to a European concept of dynamism: agility rather than dominance.

This is also reflected in the presentation of the current models. Today’s A110 feels like the logical evolution of the original – an aluminium chassis, weighing around 1,100 kilograms, compact proportions; a sports car that aims to function rather than impress. The electric A290, meanwhile, marks the transition into a new era: urban agility, electric lightness, modern performance. Things got particularly exciting at the Phoenix during the unveiling of the new A390. ( … )

rampstyle #38 Just for the Plot

In unserer Kultur verherrlichen wir die Optimierung. Alles soll planbar und möglichst risikofrei sein. Und gleichzeitig wächst die Sehnsucht nach dem Umweg. Nach dem Ungeplanten. Nach dem Echten. »Just for the plot« heißt: Ich weiß, das ist nicht unbedingt sehr vernünftig. Aber es erzählt mich besser, als die Vernunft es könnte. Denn Menschen erinnern sich an Sommer. An Reisen. An Begegnungen. An den einen Abend, der alles verändert hat. Der Plot ist die Geschichte, die wir später erzählen. Nicht die Excel-Tabelle, die wir heute führen.
