Built for the extremes

The official German heat record for 2026 stands at 41.8 degrees Celsius, recorded on 27 June in Möckern-Drewitz, Saxony-Anhalt. These temperatures would have been more bearable with the Oryon Hot Climate collection by British label ThruDark, which, as the name suggests, offers technical clothing for the hottest regions on Earth. This now applies to Germany as well.

The name? It’s no coincidence – after all, no constellation is as closely associated with heat as Orion: its brightest stars are among the hottest in the Milky Way. And the aim of the Oryon collection by ThruDark is also clear: protection and comfort for anyone spending time in hot climates. These are no longer limited to the sand dunes of the Sahara or the Amazon jungle; regions in Europe are also included.

The founders and creative minds behind ThruDark, Anthony Stazicker and Louis Tinsley, know what they’re talking about. The two former elite soldiers from the British Special Forces draw on their own experiences gained in the world’s most extreme regions to create high-performance clothing – ranging from high-quality outdoor and ski wear to activewear and everyday clothing. They draw on all their operational expertise to design clothing that is comfortable, looks good and serves its purpose in all circumstances. The standards: let’s just say they’re high. Incidentally, in their pursuit of excellence, they draw inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen: continuous and endless improvement through small, steady steps.

In the Oryon collection, this translates as follows: the latest findings in textile science are combined with highly functional designs and well-thought-out features. Specifically, this means that the new technical layering system featuring ThruDark’s own DarkMatr fabrics offers very high UPF protection, breathability and durability. Fabrics from Pertex and Polartec ensure breathability as well as water and wind resistance. This effectively helps to prevent dehydration, overheating, sunstroke and sunburn.

If there’s one thing the two founders of ThruDark learnt during their time in the military, it’s that you can’t choose whether or not you’ll face difficulties. But you can choose how you face them. This is perfectly encapsulated in the brand’s guiding principle: ”Endeavour Through Adversity” – which roughly translates as ”perseverance in the face of adversity”.

We cannot choose whether or not we face difficulties. We can only choose how we deal with them.

This is also demonstrated by ”Mission: Everest”, in which the team comprising ThruDark co-founder Anthony Stazicker, veteran Al Carns, pilot Garth Miller and entrepreneur Kevin Godlington redefined high-altitude mountaineering: travelling from London to the summit of Mount Everest and back again in seven days. A new record. At the same time, the campaign raised funds for veterans and bereaved military families.

How did they manage it?

Full acclimatisation at home: months spent in hypoxic tent chambers, which simulated oxygen conditions equivalent to an altitude of over 5,000 metres, combined with physical training at the same altitude whilst wearing oxygen masks. Shortly before setting off for Nepal, the team also inhaled a controlled dose of xenon gas – a further step to optimise the acclimatisation process and minimise the risk of altitude sickness. On the mountain itself, the four climbed using supplementary oxygen. ThruDark also equipped the entire team with four bespoke Summit Suits designed for high altitudes. The fifth-generation Summit Suit is designed for maximum speed: super-lightweight Pertex Ripstop, ultra-lightweight Dyneema, and over 700 grams of 900-fill-power goose down.
