The whole of Düsseldorf is talking about Johnny Depp and whether the Hollywood star will actually be attending the opening of the exhibition ‘The Art of Johnny Depp’ at Benrath Palace in Düsseldorf on Sunday, 30 August 2026. The fact that he’ll be rocking out two days earlier at Cologne’s Lanxess Arena as a member of the supergroup Hollywood Vampires alongside rock greats such as Alice Cooper and Joe Perry is, of course, fuelling the rumour mill even further. We’d just like to point out that on the opening night, Depp is due to perform in Hamburg, the next stop on his rock band’s tour. Be that as it may, the hype along the Rhine is certainly rife. Especially as there are only 30,000 tickets available for the four-week exhibition, all of which must be booked in advance. And besides, we don’t want to stir up the rumour mill anyway. We’d rather talk about art. 

So: the artistic style? It lies somewhere between Neo-Expressionism, Pop Art and autobiographical symbolism. The theme: a journey through the artist’s extraordinary inner world, shaped by personal experiences, encounters and memories. The visual style: stark contrasts, where black-and-white or muted colour palettes clash with sudden bursts of colour, comic-book-style exaggeration and melancholic undertones. It’s all someone else’s work. But a quick glance at Depp’s art tells us: it’s spot on.

That said, we’d like to make a confession straight away. The first part of the description, including the art-historical context, is taken from the official press release for the Düsseldorf exhibition. So far, so in line with the exhibition. The description of the visual style, on the other hand, is an AI summary. Not, however, of Depp’s works, but of the visual style of the director Tim Burton. Johnny Depp has enjoyed a long and fruitful artistic collaboration with Burton ever since his leading role in *Edward Scissorhands*. The two are kindred spirits.

This can then easily be interpreted as playing a central role in Depp’s work.
