Double Deutsch

Gainsbourg, Jagger, Gates, Stallone. They all wanted to be photographed by Jean-Claude Deutsch, who passed away last December. Now, for the very first time, a book of his work has been published.

Credit goes to his son Ilan, who is a photographer in his own right. We spoke with him about his father’s legacy – and why this kind of photography is no longer possible today.

Monsieur Deutsch, how would you describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know you? What drives you?

I’m a young French photographer. What drives me is seeing beauty in all the little things in life – waking up each morning, knowing that I’m doing something I love, both professionally and personally. I try to see life in a poetic and aesthetic way.

Since this interview is also about your father, the photographer Jean-Claude Deutsch, the same question again: who was he and what drove him?

My father was really a simple man. Very kind and exceptionally elegant. I think he transmitted to me a particular way of seeing life – to recognize beauty in small things, to cherish my relationships with others. I think that’s what drove him too. He wasn’t a photographer in the classic sense, he didn’t know so much about the technique. What was important for him was the connection he had with people.

Ilan Deutsch

Did that ability – looking for connections to the people he was taking pictures of – contribute to his success as a photographer?

Absolutely. His pictures were intimate, authentic. And that was thanks to his personality. He treated everyone – the big movie stars or interns at Paris Match – the same way. People really loved him for that. He was charismatic, but also discreet. I never heard him speaking badly of people or gossiping. He was above that.

How would you describe your father’s work from today’s perspective?

Times have changed a lot. He was embedded in the celebrity world and was able to spend a lot of time with them. I do the same kind of work today, but it feels completely different.

How so?

My father would go on tour with Michael Jackson for ten days or spend the holidays with an actress in the south of France. Nowadays, I might get five or ten minutes in a hotel room – with ten PR people breathing down my neck saying: “Don’t do this, don’t do that, time’s up.” It’s impossible to build any type of connection with celebrities anymore. That’s why I think this kind of photography isn’t possible today. Of course, my father’s work was also tied closely to Paris Match.
