Iceland Film Festival 2026

Secluded, sophisticated

When you hear the words ‘film festival’, do you think of red carpets, designer fashion and a flurry of camera flashes?

Then get ready for a new, refreshing perspective – brought to you by the Hornstrandir Film Festival in the Westfjords of northern Iceland. The venue has no roads, no reception and no cinemas. Here, we’ll take a closer look at why this is precisely what makes the festival so promising.

    Hornstrandir Film Festival

A story like this really draws its life from real life. From the highs. The lows. And everything in between. But above all, it has to be authentic. Just like the rugged landscape of Iceland’s Westfjords.

From 15 to 21 July 2026, the Hornstrandir Film Festival (HFF) is taking the cinema experience right there: to the nature reserve of the same name, accessible only by boat. No foyer, no popcorn, no cosy seat in row 7. Instead, filmmakers and guests hike together over mountains, through fjords and along the coast – from one screening venue to the next. The organisers even haul the technical equipment there on foot and by boat. Ambitious? Absolutely. But that’s precisely the point: the HFF aims to view art and nature conservation not as separate entities, but as intertwined.

One of the highlights of this year’s edition is “The Forgotten Coast”. In it, photographer Chris Burkard documents a 400-kilometre expedition along an entire river system: 41 glacial rivers, crossed by fat bikes and inflatable boats.

“Under the Arctic Sky” follows six surfers along Iceland’s spectacular coastline. In “Songs of Earth”, director Margreth Olin accompanies her father through the vast landscape of a Norwegian valley. Incidentally, the executive producer of this film is Wim Wenders.

The organisation behind the festival is also noteworthy: the entire project is planned and run on a voluntary basis.

Sounds like an event you’d like to attend yourself? You can already register for the 2027 edition.
