Coming in hot: Genesis Magma Racing

If you’re going to embrace a design philosophy called “Athletic Elegance,” it’s only fitting to prove your athleticism under competitive conditions. That’s exactly what Genesis is doing. In Dubai, the Koreans unveiled their motorsport brand – and the name is already turning up the heat: Genesis Magma Racing.

Genesis’ ambition? To shake up the world of motorsport. And if you’re going to do that, why not aim straight for the top? Winning the world’s most prestigious endurance race at Le Mans is the goal, with victories at other legendary sports car classics along the way. In short, the team name “Genesis Magma Racing” is as much a statement as it is an identity: light up the  tires as well as the racing scene and shift the tectonics at the pinnacle of motorsport. Magma, indeed.

“This entry into motorsport is a natural evolution for Genesis,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis. “As we look to push the boundaries of our brand, motorsport allows us to bring the spirit of hyperspeed — which drives how we create and innovate — in a way that aligns perfectly with our core values: Audacious, Progressive, and Distinctly Korean.”

Genesis’ motorsport efforts are coordinated by Hyundai Motorsport GmbH, whose president, Cyril Abiteboul, will also serve as Team Principal for Genesis Magma Racing. After securing titles in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) and TCR, Abiteboul is perfectly positioned to take Genesis into this new chapter. The team will debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar class in 2026 and expand to the North American IMSA SportsCar Championship in 2027.

At the heart of Genesis’ motorsport venture is the GMR-001 Hypercar, unveiled in Dubai. Its striking design embodies the brand’s “Athletic Elegance” philosophy in a high-performance package, featuring Genesis’ signature two-line headlights. These sleek, horizontal lights wrap around the front and rear, simultaneously paying homage to the brand’s design DNA and offering a bold vision for future models.

Donckerwolke added, “The GMR-001 Hypercar and our Magma models represent a fusion of Genesis’ performance ambitions with our design-driven DNA. From the intense orange of Magma, symbolising Korean passion and energy, to the precision engineering behind each component, we are entering a new chapter, where speed meets elegance.”

In the cockpit of the GMR-001, endurance world champion and Le Mans winner André Lotterer shares the wheel with IMSA ace Luís Felipe “Pipo” Derani. Both drivers are heavily involved in the car’s technical development and simulator testing as they prepare for the first LMDh season in 2026. In addition, the newly formed team is honing its skills with IDEC Sport in the LMP2 class of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS). The lineup includes former Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant (USA), young British talent Jamie Chadwick, and 19-year-old French prodigy Mathys Jaubert.
