The Need for Speed

Anyone with even the slightest passion for cars should be tuning in to Goodwood this weekend, from 9 to 12 July – either in person in West Sussex or via livestream. Our guide to the Festival of Speed and the events we’re particularly looking forward to.

How did an English country estate become a mecca for car and motorsport enthusiasts? The story begins in 1948, when Frederick Gordon-Lennox, the 9th Duke of Richmond, opened the Goodwood Circuit on a former military airfield. His grandson, Charles Gordon-Lennox, revived the tradition in 1993 with the first Festival of Speed. Today, Goodwood is far more than just a motorsport event: it is a meeting place, an open-air museum, a garden party and a laboratory for the future all rolled into one.

The legendary Hillclimb remains the centrepiece of the event. The 1.87-kilometre course winds its way through the grounds of Goodwood House, bringing together historic racing cars, modern supercars, prototypes and motorbikes. The sporting highlight remains the Timed Shoot-Out on Sunday. Max Chilton’s record from 2022 still stands: 39.08 seconds is the time to beat.

A new feature is the FOS Fan Zone, which is included in the ticket price. In addition, the Future Lab offers an insight into topics such as autonomous mobility, electrification and new technologies. And, of course, Goodwood remains one of the most important venues for vehicle launches. Manufacturers from all over the world use the setting to present new models to the public for the first time – this year’s line-up includes the new Alpine A110 and the CUPRA Raval.

McLaren is bringing the newly recreated M6GT to Goodwood, marking a particularly special debut. The one-off was developed by McLaren Special Operations as a tribute to Bruce McLaren’s late-1960s road car project that never reached production. Rather than chasing modern hypercar performance figures, the focus is on historical authenticity and craftsmanship – from the 5.7-litre small-block V8 with its highly sought-after “camel hump” cylinder heads to the faithfully recreated bodywork.

Our friends from Crewe are also set to make things particularly exciting: Bentley will be present with more than 35 vehicles and a 500-square-metre stand. At the Hillclimb, the original 1926 Supersports – often affectionately known as ‘Smoky’ – will face off against the new 2026 model year Supersports. A hundred years of Bentley history on just a few metres of tarmac. The Continental GT S, Flying Spur S and Bentayga Artenara will be joined by the Supersports Full Send, Continental GTC Speed and Continental GT S. Also on display will be the curated colour gradients of the ‘Design Theme by Mullinger’ and the ombré paint finishes from the Dream Factory.

Even away from the cars, Goodwood promises some special moments. Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris is set to appear alongside MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi – two icons from different disciplines on the same stage.

We are also looking forward to Ducati’s 100th anniversary, which will be celebrated at the Festival of Speed. Numerous successful riders from the Italian brand have confirmed their attendance, making Goodwood once again the meeting place for the international motorsport scene.
