From 21 to 26 April, the Salone del Mobile in Milan will once again showcase the hottest brands, products and collaborations in the field of furniture and interior design. For us, this is the ideal opportunity to take a closer look – both at the timeless and at what's to come. At what good design actually is. What it does. And above all: what stories it tells.

Loro Piana

The Italian fashion label, known for its fine workmanship of fine woollen fabrics and yarns, is presenting "Studies, Chapter I: On the Plaid" at the Salone del Mobile – an installation dedicated to the precise craftsmanship of weaving. Since its introduction in the mid-1980s, the plaid has served as a field of experimentation in which selected materials meet sophisticated constructions and fibres enter into dialogue with a variety of techniques.

Montblanc

Whether you're writing a novel or sketching a design – all stories begin at the desk. With the "The Art of the Desk" collection from Montblanc, this personal space is now further enhanced – with a curated selection of objects designed to inspire creativity. The collection includes notebooks, pencil cases, letter openers and desk trays, many of which can also be personalised. The highlight is certainly the desk with matching rosewood chair.

Knoll

The design classic par excellence and our all-time favourite: the Barcelona Chair from Knoll. The iconic seat was designed by the German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the Spanish royal couple – so the throne-like appearance of the X-legs is anything but a coincidence. Incidentally, the chair celebrated its premiere in the German Pavilion at the 1929 World's Fair, which – you guessed it – took place in Barcelona.

USM Haller

Another classic, and quite rightly so: the shelving system from USM Haller: As with all good designs, the basic idea is convincingly simple: chrome-plated spheres and rods that can be combined almost endlessly, coloured panels as fillers for the spaces in between. With this simple recipe, the Swiss family-run company USM has been demonstrating for decades how simplicity can triumph over complexity.

USM is also represented at this year's design fair with two installations: "Renaissance of the Real" with architecture firm Snøhetta and "Wonderland of the Monsters" with artist and picture book author Kasing Lung. More on this here shortly.

The Carlton Milan

A modern homage to a legendary name: The "Carlton" in the heart of Milan opened in November and perfectly captures the tone and elegance of Milan with its blend of tradition, attention to detail and intuitive luxury.
