BMW Motorbikes:
Superbike? Superhooligan!

On 6 March 1976, racing rider Steve McLaughlin made racing history with his very first Superbike victory in Daytona. 50 years later, BMW Motorrad is honouring this success with a new custom power roadster: the BMW R1300 R Superhooligan.

The American Steve Mclaughlin won the 200 miles in Daytona in 1976 in a photo finish ahead of his team-mate Reg Pridmore, from whom he took what he thought was a certain victory in the final metres. Pridmore was again the overall winner of the AMA Superbike Championship. Both raced a BMW R 90 S for the Butler & Smith team at the time.

50 years later, as part of the 84th edition of the 200 Miles of Daytona from 5 to 7 March 2026, BMW Motorrad is presenting the BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan - a tribute to the very first Superbike victory. It is not only the starting number 83 that brings back memories, but also the same colour accents (keyword: Daytona Orange) as back then.

The reinterpretation also boasts 275 km/h, the BMW M 1000 RR carbon front wheel, carbon components, fully adjustable hand levers and a lightweight titanium exhaust system with carbon rear silencer. As a naked superbike, it lives up to its name.

This year, BMW Motorrad brand ambassador Nate Kern will be racing the new BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan at Daytona.

Will Kern be as victorious as McLaughlin and Pridmore before him? That remains to be seen from 5 to 7 March. You can cheer along in the livestream.
