Fireworks by Volkswagen

So how do you do it in China? With an "In China, for China" strategy. What does such a "People's Car" look like? Can be experienced at Auto China.

Before we take a closer look at Volkswagen's appearance at Auto China in Beijing, let's start with a brief digression: did you know that fireworks were probably invented by Taoist monks during the Tang Dynasty in the 6th to 7th centuries? The original purpose: to drive away evil spirits. Today's purpose: entertainment. And when Volkswagen now sets off fireworks in Beijing, it is for precisely these two purposes: to drive away the evil spirits of Chinese competitors and to delight Far Eastern customers – and only them – in all price segments with mobile entertainment.

Welcome to the digital lounge: the five-metre-long flagship saloon for the Chinese market is a technology carrier par excellence. At its heart is the new "multi-agent AI system", in which specialised AI agents for autonomous driving, infotainment and energy management interact in real time. The fact that the AI also intuitively recognises the needs of the occupants and that the saloon with its 800-volt architecture enables extremely short charging times? That's a given.

With this vehicle, some are already talking about cultural appropriation. As is typical for Chinese car manufacturers, the all-electric mid-range SUV is designed with the software in mind. After all, it is intended to assert itself in the most fiercely contested segment. The locally developed China Electronic Architecture (CEA) provides it with the means to do so. This means continuous over-the-air updates (OTA) and a level 2++ driver assistance system. This will not only allow the car to navigate on the motorway with autopilot, but also in city traffic and when parking.

Those who understand "range anxiety" as an exclusively German phenomenon are not yet familiar with the average large Chinese family in the sprawling Chinese provinces. VW has really stepped on the gas to put an end to this. Presented as a concept a year ago, the full-size SUV equipped with a range extender is already available to order. The 1.5-litre petrol engine serves exclusively as a generator to feed the 65.2 kWh battery, which enables a combined range of more than 1,000 kilometres. The interior of the 5.21 metre-long luxury suite features a 2+2+2 seating configuration and a "Smart Cinema" concept including a fold-out 21-inch screen for the rear passengers and a karaoke system. This even makes it possible to endure traffic jams in Beijing.
