A mechanical dream: TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12

There are watches inspired by motorsport. And then there are watches that really do work like an engine. That’s not just a figure of speech; we’re talking about the TAG Heuer Monaco Speed 12. It was fittingly unveiled in the Principality during the Monaco Grand Prix.

It’s all about seconds and their fractions. In motorsport just as much as in the watch industry. Technical excellence is essential in both. TAG Heuer is now taking things a step further with the Monaco Speed 12, unveiling a watch at the Formula 1 weekend in Monaco that operates like a twelve-cylinder engine.

The highlight is right in the centre of the dial: twelve pistons, rotating in turn, ingeniously display the hours. When the single central minute hand completes a full hour, a new ‘piston’ rotates into view, revealing the current hour.

At its heart lies the TH84-00 calibre, developed in collaboration with the La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton manufacture. The result is a kinetic sculpture housed in a titanium case, which seems to offer a glimpse under the bonnet of a supercar.

Vertical structures are reminiscent of valve covers, the delicate minute display of cockpit instruments – and the hour pistons of real pistons.

The Speed 12 builds on the legacy of an icon. Since its launch in 1969, the Monaco is now regarded as one of the most important motorsport watches of all time. At the time, it was the first water-resistant wristwatch with a square chronograph case and became a legend, partly thanks to Steve McQueen. And it continues to build on this legend with confidence.
