Tom Cruise x Porsche Design

Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, was released in theaters in 2022. Despite the many years between the first and second installment, there are two things that didn’t change: Tom Cruise played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell with the same passion and enthusiasm – and the character was again seen wearing an Orfina x Porsche Design Chronograph on his wrist.

To recap: Porsche Design developed the Chronograph 1 in 1972 in collaboration with Swiss watchmaker Orfina. It came with a Lemania 5100 movement (Reference 7176s) and later with the Valjoux / ETA 7750.

In the original from 1986, you can see that the watch is powered by a Valjoux 7750, recognizable by the subdial at 12 o’clock with minute track and 10/20/30 markers. The Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph 1 has a black dial with white indexes and a red central chronograph seconds hand. The watch was one of the first models with black PVD coating and featured a design that was directly derived from the instrument panel of the Porsche 911.
