Like on rails

When five strangers in the road movie "791 km" have to travel from Munich to Hamburg in a cab due to a train breakdown, we spontaneously think of our author Kurt Molzer. He has covered the distance more than once: once in a Ferrari. And then in an Audi e-tron GT.

Of course, it's easy to get annoyed with the railroads in these times. When (snow) storms aren't paralyzing trains and tracks, their employees are doing it by going on strike. The film "791 km" (currently in theaters) seems almost prophetic. In fact, Munich and Hamburg are separated by exactly 791 kilometers of track. Perfect for a relaxed journey. Only in this case, a storm has paralyzed the train service. And because Marianne (Iris Berben), Tiana (Nilam Farooq), Susi (Lena Urzendowsky) and Philipp (Ben Münchow) are in a hurry, they have to get into a cab driven by grumpy Josef (Joachim Król). The ideal starting point for a cramped and tragicomic road trip chamber drama.

Our author Kurt Molzer can tell you a thing or two about what a trip like this can feel like when you're in a hurry. He drove the 760 kilometers on the road twice. The first time was in the noughties in a red Ferrari 575M Maranello on behalf of a men's lifestyle magazine. A self-proclaimed "highway boss" had bragged a little too loudly about his driving time of 4 hours 15 minutes. Kurt's answer: 3 hours 34 minutes at an average speed of 242 km/h. And that despite adverse conditions: first heavy rain, then lost car keys in the service area toilet during a refueling stop and then wet asphalt in the Kassel mountains, including a borderline driving experience.

We then forced him to make the second attempt from ramp. The vehicle: an Audi etron GT with 476 hp. The record time: just missed. The trip took a whole ten hours. Although this had less to do with Kurt's driving skills and more to do with slow or non-existent (but urgently needed) charging points. And admittedly, Molzer's foot on the gas didn't really help the range of the e-Audi either.
