Summer is made for travelling: Hideaways

Germans have a word for everything, don’t they? The term “Sommerfrische”, for example, can be defined as “the yearning of city dwellers for the countryside during summer”. We’ve got three destinations here for you that just might satisfy that need.

City of Sin: Gran Hotel La Florida, Barcelona

The origin of the name Tibidabo, the hill on which this hotel was built, goes back to the legend that this is the place where the devil tried to tempt Jesus. The short version of what the devil said to him, “Haec tibi omnia dabo”, translates to: “All these things will I give to thee.” So apparently the view over land and sea was pretty good even back then. Built in 1924, the Gran Hotel La Florida served as a military hospital during the Spanish Civil War and only reopened to paying guests in the 1950s, with Barcelona’s high society particularly fond of spending their summers here. Today the view is best enjoyed from Deluxe Room208 (see below) or from the hotel’s panorama terrace. That all sounds very relaxing, but what about temptation? No problem: Barcelona can be reached in twenty minutes by car, and there’s a free shuttle service three times a day.

A Heart for Animals:
Cuixmala, Mexiko

The beautiful lagoon visible from the terrace of the Cuixmala eco-resort beckons for a swim. But swimming is strictly off-limits – because of the crocodiles. In general, you should love animals if you come to Cuixmala, because the hotel on Mexico’s Pacific coast is situated in a 30,000-hectare UNESCO biosphere reserve that is also home to turtles, zebras and jaguars. Up into the late 1990s, the property was the private retreat of eccentric billionaire and almost militant conservationist James Goldsmith, who had made sustainability a priority already during its construction.

House of Culture: Hotel Josefine, Vienna

The hotel owes its name to the French aristocrat Josephine de Bourblanc, who took refuge from the Russian Revolution in the house built by her father in 1896 and turned it into a hotel. Over the years, she hosted musicians and actors from all over the world here. It was a sort of cultural salon. Perhaps this is the reason for the hotel’s unique charm. Freshly renovated in the glamorous style of the 1920s and 1930s, each of the 49 rooms has its own little peculiarities. Be sure to treat yourself to a cocktail in the Barfly’s Club in the basement of the hotel.
