There are many legends about what the stripes on the sailor's shirt mean. One of them says that they symbolize waves and serve as a talisman for superstitious fishermen should they ever go overboard. What is certain is that the French navy declared the “Marinière”, as the shirt is called, to be the official garment of sailors in 1858. Design icon Coco Chanel finally made it socially acceptable in Paris. Our Outfit of the Day shows how casual and beautiful these stripes can be – whether on your next city trip or a trip to the seaside.
