Opera for everyone:
Clear the stage
thanks to BMW

For the 30th time, Munich is being transformed into an open-air cultural venue. Set against a backdrop of neoclassical façades, picnic blankets and the setting sun, high culture becomes exceptionally accessible – thanks in part to BMW. All the details on this year’s edition of ‘Opera for All’ on 4 July.

There are moments when a city changes its rhythm. The traffic falls silent, conversations grow quieter and all eyes turn to a single spot. In Munich? That’s exactly what happens regularly at the start of July – not inside the State Opera House, but outside it, or to be more precise, at the ‘Opera for All’. No one needs an invitation, no one needs an evening gown. Just time – and a willingness to engage with Richard Wagner.

On 4 July, the performance of *Die Walküre* will be broadcast live from the National Theatre onto a big screen: Chief Conductor Vladimir Jurowski will conduct, Tobias Kratzer will direct the production, and presenter Steven Gätjen will host the evening from 5 pm.

For almost three decades, BMW has been making this unusual cultural format possible, taking opera out of its traditional setting and bringing it right into the heart of urban life.

Wagner’s *Die Walküre* tells a story of power, love, loyalty and rebellion – themes that, even almost 150 years after its premiere, have lost none of their power. Set against a backdrop of divine intrigues and human longings, the second part of the monumental *Ring of the Nibelung* unfolds as an emotional tour de force, whose famous fire magic remains one of the most impressive moments in the history of opera to this day.

When the “Opera for All” was launched in 1997 as a joint initiative between the Bavarian State Opera and BMW, the idea was as simple as it was radical: culture should not be a matter of ticket prices or social barriers. What began in Munich has since become an international model – with branches in Berlin, London and Melbourne.

Perhaps that is precisely what makes this format so magical. Whilst one of Europe’s most renowned opera houses is in full swing inside, outside there is an atmosphere you won’t find in any opera guide: families alongside Wagner connoisseurs, tourists alongside Munich locals, children alongside die-hard festival-goers. High culture without social boundaries – without losing a single bit of its grandeur.

Tickets: Free admission on Max-Joseph-Platz.
How to get there: Due to extensive road closures, all visitors are advised to travel by public transport. Bicycle racks are available on Marstallplatz.
