The Birth of a Legend

It all began at Spa. It was there that Michael Schumacher won his first Formula 1 race in 1992 and his seventh and final World Championship title in 2004. Even back then, he impressed his rivals with his courage, his mastery of the car, but also with a certain irreverence. And then came 1994. The year that would shape his career like no other. Now, a new documentary on Netflix focuses on that very season. It also features previously unseen footage of the racing driver.

Seven world championship titles, 91 wins and 68 pole positions: an impressive record that makes Michael Schumacher one of the most successful Formula 1 drivers in history.

But let’s start at the beginning: Schumacher began his motorsport career in karting at the age of just four. Via Formula König and Formula 3, he made his way into Formula 1, where he made his debut for Jordan at Spa in 1991. Later that same year, he moved to Benetton.

Then came 1994: the year that would shape the rest of a great career. After a season in which it remained unclear for a long time how it would end, Schumacher clinched the title at the final race in Australia. And the victory could hardly have been more dramatic. Schumacher’s car initially grazed the wall; whilst attempting to overtake him, Damon Hill collided with him. Both drivers retired, and Schumacher won the championship by a narrow margin of one point.

The most successful year in Formula 1 history was arguably also its darkest. For whilst the drivers were racking up victories and setting new records, the fatal accidents involving Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger at Imola shook the sport to its core, as did allegations of match-fixing, disqualifications and suspensions.

Director Christin Freitag’s film focuses on the moment when the outsider became a world champion and Michael became the phenomenon known as Schumi. It includes the controversies and scandals of 1994. Never-before-seen footage paints a portrait of Schumacher, in which his wife Corinna Schumacher and close associates such as Flavio Briatore, Willi Weber and Kai Ebel offer insights into how the racing driver was perceived in his private life, as well as in the paddock and in public.
