Your good star on all platforms

The German Emperor Wilhelm II once remarked that the car was merely a passing fad. And following the video game crash of 1983, respected economic analysts believed they had witnessed the end of this fad. They were wrong. All of them.

And those who were prematurely written off are now happily joining forces. A recent example from GamesCom 2026: the debut of the Mercedes-Benz 190 E Evo II in Fortnite and Rocket League.

140 years before Gamescom 2026, Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler were still at their workbenches. In their hands: screwdrivers instead of controllers. Their highest score was the first long-distance journey in motoring history, driven by Bertha Benz, without a single charging point, skill tree or respawn point. Had there been a Battle Pass back then, the two of them would probably have unlocked it wearing top hats and carrying chronometers. For them, ‘Winning’ wasn’t an emote, but a patent.

In 2026, their great-great-great-grandchildren will turn this into a real event: in Cologne, the legendary 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II will meet Fortnite and Rocket League, right next to the new CLA and the AMG GT 63 S. Motorsport legend meets loot box logic, and anyone sitting behind the wheel in the AMG Performance Garage on a MOZA racing wheel will quickly realise: ‘Get in the car’ was a Mercedes principle even before Fast & Furious. Except that today it’s the MBUX Virtual Assistant having its say instead of a passenger who nervously glances at their watch.

Would Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz be pleased with the result? Presumably so. Even if they would have mistaken the 50 gaming PCs on Fortnite Island for a very large factory hall. But there’s one thing they would have understood straight away: six continents, 140 objectives, a company anniversary, a grinding loop that runs until October. Some speedruns just take a bit longer.
