Sound of Stuttgart

The Jazz Open in Stuttgart – it started small and intimate, has grown ever larger, yet has remained remarkably refined: what began in 1994 with artists such as Randy Crawford, Pat Metheny and The Flying Pickets is now one of Germany’s most important open-air festivals. Until 12 July, the city will once again be the stage for international music greats.

This year’s headliners include Jamiroquai, Lenny Kravitz, Jamie Cullum and Katy Perry. At the SpardaWelt Event Centre, saxophonist Joshua Redman – one of the most renowned and charismatic jazz musicians of our time – will be performing. Moby will bring the festival to a close on 12 July – and will be presenting his new album ‘Future Quiet’.

In this context, it is worth taking a look at the roots of the genre: jazz emerged in New Orleans at the end of the 19th century from African-American musical traditions and is still regarded today as one of the most influential forms of modern music – open to new ideas, characterised by improvisation and constantly evolving – just like the Jazz Open itself.
