Cologne is world-famous for two events in particular. One is Carnival. The other: Gamescom. The latter is currently in the run-up to the event, with the opening night taking place on 25 August. From 26 to 30 August, the event transforms the city into a massive gaming festival. Underground trains, parks and cafés are teeming with cosplayers, anime characters and elves. The boundaries between everyday life and the virtual world? They visibly blur.
But Gamescom isn’t just a trade fair. It is Europe’s largest Magic Circle, a temporary space where millions of people follow different rules for a few days. An approach which, incidentally, also originates from Huizinga.
What does this look like in practice? Across 233,000 square metres with around 1,600 exhibitors, visitors have the opportunity, amongst other things, to meet up with the huge community from all over the world, experience talks under the theme ‘Games inspire a vision of the future”, or to try out the latest gaming releases.
