Back to the Future: Apple Design

Apple may not be present as a brand at the Milan Design Week, but it still dominated the headlines at the start with the announcement of the change of CEO from Tim Cook to John Ternus. Well, and what is an iconic design brand influences the entire industry anyway. If you want to know which design Apple considers to be fit for the future, the best place to visit in Milan is the Convey design platform. Marco Campardo is one of three designers who were honoured as "Apple's Designer of Tomorrow" in October.

For those who want to look back on 50 years of Apple: the book "Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation" brings together the greatest (design) milestones from Cupertino. And the Computer Museum Oldenburg is dedicating a special exhibition to the brand until September to mark the anniversary.

The "Digital Dictionary of the German Language" defines an icon as a "cult image depicting saints or religiously significant events". In this respect, the title "Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation" seems entirely appropriate for a photo book about Apple's design. After all, what Messrs Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne founded in a simple garage at 2066 Crist Drive in Los Altos turned out to be quite significant. And they also achieved saint status in the tech scene to boot.


The strength of the book lies above all in its retrospective: When computers were still beige cuboids, Steve Jobs introduced the half-milky-transparent, half-coloured iMac to the world, which was the prelude to a series of revolutions whose driving force was the beauty of the object. Prototypes such as the portable computer with the transparent housing are also fascinating, but did not make it to market maturity.

Just as fascinating: Apple not just as a design powerhouse, but as a cultural phenomenon. This is the aim of a special exhibition at the Oldenburg Computer Museum (OCM), which traces Apple's development from its early experiments to a globally active company. It also traces its impact in the areas of work, communication, music, photography and perception – all of which Apple has changed in the long term. Of course, the devices with the Apple logo also take centre stage, but above all the ideas, attitudes and design principles that gave rise to them.
