Good things take time. This is especially true of whisky. The 88YO from The Balvenie’s 1931 Collection has had a full 88 years to mature. And it is now having its moment in the spotlight – encased in a sculpture by the renowned contemporary artist Daniel Arsham.

Looking at the list of American artist Daniel Arsham’s previous collaboration partners is like taking a stroll down Munich’s Maximilianstraße: it includes Tiffany & Co., Rimowa, Dior, Hublot and Porsche. New to his portfolio: The Balvenie – a Scottish distillery that has been producing whisky since 1892.

The artist and the distillery have joined forces for a very special project: the 1931 Collection. At the heart of the collection is the 88YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky, distilled in 1931 and matured in cask no. 239. In 2019, Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie had it bottled. In seventeen bottles. A limited edition in every sense of the word. Daniel Arsham has now created a sculptural design for the oldest bottling in the brand’s history. Alongside the 88YO, the collection comprises two further limited editions: a 15YO and a 12YO.

The perfect setting to showcase this collection? An art fair, of course – specifically Frieze Seoul, which has been showcasing contemporary art every September since 2022. The presentation included an immersive performance: directed by Daniel Arsham and choreographed by Sukyung Yoo, dancers moved across a surface covered in barley grains.
