If the wintry temperatures are drawing you to the sofa rather than outside, we have the ideal activity for you: watching films. But not just any films, but the best of the best from the year 2025, which the jury of the 98th Academy Awards has now put together - the shortlists from twelve categories are now public. And here they are, with highlights curated by us, of course:

The shortlist for the "Best animated short film" category:

  • Autokar
  • Butterfly
  • Cardboard
  • Éiru
  • Forevergreen
  • The Girl Who Cried Pearls
  • Hurikán
  • I Died in Irpin
  • The Night Boots
  • Retirement Plan
  • Playing God
  • The Quinta's Ghost
  • The Shyness of Trees
  • Snow Bear
  • The Three Sisters
The ramp editors' favourite:

"Retirement Plan" is a seven-minute film about possibilities, time and the dream of freedom. A meditative and inspiring source of inspiration for the "just do it" impulse.

The shortlist for the "Best Casting" category:

  • Frankenstein
  • Hamnet
  • One Battle after Another
  • Marty Supreme
  • The Secret Agent
  • Sentimental Value
  • Sinners
  • Sirât
  • Weapons
  • Wicked: For Good
The ramp editors' favourite:

"One Battle after Another" thrives on action, humour and plot density. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of left-wing radical Pat, whose daughter Willa disappears - at the same time as his arch-enemy Lockjaw reappears on the scene. A thrilling chase begins that confronts everyone involved with their past.

The shortlist for the "Best Cinematography" category:

    • Ballad of a Small Player
    • Bugonia
    • F1
    • Frankenstein
    • Hamnet
    • Marty Supreme
    • Nouvelle Vague
    • One Battle after Another
    • Sentimental Value
    • Sinners
    • Sirât
    • Song Sung Blue
    • Sound of Falling
    • Train Dreams
    • The My Love
    • Wicked: For Good
    The ramp editors' favourite:

Grace and her husband Jackson move to the country together - and quickly become parents. An engaging story about motherhood and the fragility of love, told in a refreshingly unconventional visual language.

The shortlist for the category "Best Documentary Film":

      • The Alabama Solution
      • Apocalypse in the Tropics
      • Coexistence, My Ass!
      • Mistress Dispeller
      • Come See Me in the Good Light
      • Cover-Up
      • Cutting through Rocks
      • Folktales
      • Holding Liat
      • Mr. Nobody against Putin
      • My Undesirable Friends: Part 1 - Last Air in Moscow
      • The Perfect Neighbour
      • Seeds
      • 2000 Meters to Andriivka
      • Yanuni
      The ramp editors' favourite:

On the list of the most unusual jobs, the profession of Chinese Mistress Dispeller is right at the top: These people have made it their mission to mend marriages that have been marred by cheating. The documentary film of the same name follows one of these cases, provides intimate insights into the emotional worlds of all those involved and at the same time reveals a lot about the norms and values in China. Engaging, emotional and instructive at the same time.

The shortlist for the category "Best Documentary Short Film":

        • All the Empty Rooms
        • All the Walls Came Down
        • Armed Only with a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud
        • Bad Hostage
        • Cashing Out
        • Chasing Time
        • Children No More: "Were and Are Gone"
        • Classroom 4
        • The Devil Is Busy
        • Heartbeat
        • Last Days on Lake Trinity
        • On Healing Land, Birds Perch
        • Perfectly a Strangeness
        • Rovina's Choice
        • We Were the Scenery
        The ramp editors' favourite:

The setting: an abortion clinic in Atlanta. The spectacle: it is besieged by countless demonstrators. "The Devil Is Busy" follows the head of security Tracii for a day as she protects the patients.

The shortlist for the category "Best International Film":

          • Sound of Falling (Germany)
          • Belén (Argentina)
          • The Secret Agent (Brazil)
          • It Was Just an Accident (France)
          • Homebound (India)
          • The President's Cake (Iraq)
          • Kokuho (Japan)
          • All That's Left of You (Jordan)
          • Sentimental Value (Norway)
          • Palestine 36 (Palestine)
          • No Other Choice (South Korea)
          • Sirât (Spain)
          • Late Shift (Switzerland)
          • Left-Handed Girl (Taiwan)
          • The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia)
          The ramp editors' favourite:

"Sound of Falling" describes the life stories of four women that are interwoven in an uncanny way - expressed on film through an impressive mosaic of sequences from the 1910s to the present day.

The shortlist for the category "Best Live Action Short Film":

          • Ado
          • Amarela
          • Beyond Silence
          • The Boy with White Skin
          • Butcher's Stain
          • Butterfly on a Wheel
          • Dad's Not Home
          • Extremist
          • Jane Austen's Period Drama
          • Pantyhose
          • The Pearl Comb
          • A Friend of Dorothy
          • Rock, Paper, Scissors
          • The Singers
          • Two People Exchanging Saliva
              The ramp editors' favourite:

The fact that neighbours Dorothy and JJ develop a friendship must have surprised even the two of them - they are so different. "A Friend of Dorothy" tells the story of how a 17-year-old turns a widow's life upside down.

The shortlist for the "Best Hair & Make-up" category:

                • The Ugly Stepsister
                • Nuremberg
                • Wicked: For Good
                    The ramp editors' favourite:

"Nuremberg" deals with the Nuremberg Trial - and combines historical education with entertainment. At the centre is the American prison psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, who is tasked with examining the psyche of the accused.

The shortlist for the category "Best Soundtrack":

                    • Avatar: Fire and Ash
                    • Bugonia
                    • Captain America: Brave New World
                    • Diane Warren: Relentless

                    • Jay Kelly
                    • Marty Supreme
                    • Nuremberg
                    • One Battle after Another
                    • Sinners
                    • Sirât
                    • Train Dreams
                    • Tron: Ares
                    • Truth and Treason
                    • Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
                    • Wicked: For Good
                        The ramp editors' favourite:

A vampire horror film about new beginnings, racism and fear: In "Sinners", the Smokestack twins open a dance hall for the black community after returning from Chicago. However, the story takes a turn and becomes a nightmare from which no one wakes up any time soon.

The shortlist for the "Best Song" category:

                          • "As Alive As You Need Me To Be" (Tron: Ares)
                          • "Dear Me" (Diane Warren: Relentless)

                          • "Golden" (KPop Demon Hunters)
                          • "Highest 2 Lowest" (Highest 2 Lowest)
                          • "I Lied To You" (Sinners)
                          • "Last Time (I Seen The Sun)" (Sinners)
                          • "No Place Like Home" (Wicked: For Good)
                          • "Our Love" (The Ballad of Wallis Island)
                          • "Salt Then Sour Then Sweet" (Come See Me in the Good Light)
                          • "Sweet Dreams Of Joy" (Viva Verdi!)
                          • "Train Dreams" (Train Dreams)
                          • "Dying To Live" (Billy Idol Should Be Dead)
                          The ramp editors' favourite:

"Billy Idol Should Be Dead" is not a threat, but an ironic praise to the artist who has often looked death in the eye only to turn the corner. This is also shown in the documentary of the same name, a tribute to the career and work of Billy Idol. So it goes without saying that the accompanying song "Dying To Live" is a must-listen.

The shortlist for the category "Best Sound":

                          • Avatar: Fire and Ash
                          • Frankenstein
                          • F1
                          • Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning
                          • One Battle after Another
                          • Sinners
                          • Sirât
                          • Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere
                          • Superman
                          • Wicked: For Good
                              The ramp editors' favourite:

We are Petrol-Head ... So it's clear that "F1" has made it into the favourites. The blockbuster about the fictional Formula 1 racing team APXGP has to be emphasised in particular for its great sound. And the story. And the realistic images. As you can see: "F1" is a must-see.

The shortlist for the category "Best Visual Effects":

                              • Avatar: Fire and Ash
                              • The Electric State
                              • Frankenstein
                              • F1
                              • Jurassic World Rebirth
                              • The Lost Bus
                              • Sinners
                              • Superman
                              • Tron: Ares
                              • Wicked: For Good
                                  The ramp editors' favourite:

You know the story of Frankenstein. The film adaptation by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro is characterised by its visually stunning production, emotional depth and, above all, the visual effects that bring the monster to life.

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards will be announced on 22 January 2026.

Focusing on the essentials, blocking out everything else... If you’re focused, you’ve already mastered one important key skill. In our multimodal world, focus is, unfortunately, a rather limited resource. In particularly focused moments, we forget all about time. But do we run the risk of developing tunnel vision? Does focus lose its power over time? Do we become habituated? Far from it. Unexpected surprises? Bring ‘em on!

Luxury is enticing and exciting, polarizing and provocative, not to mention that it is good for the economy. But the essence of luxury goes far beyond the material. Luxury appeals to our senses, our dreams and our desires. It immediately evokes images that are as precise as they are diverse.
