Passione Engadina: The Sweet Guide

Passione Engadina has been synonymous with a passion for classic cars in particular for the past 15 years. This year, the exclusive festival, themed ‘The Italian Job’, was dedicated to Italian automotive art. 130 teams took to the starting line, ranging from a 1953 Fiat 8V Zagato to a Lancia Stratos. What is it that still makes these classic cars so appealing today? We went to find out.

Four days, 130 teams, one thing in common: petrol running through their veins and a passion for Italian craftsmanship. This year, the Passione Engadina celebrated its 15th anniversary. In keeping with the occasion, the organisers chose a theme that sounds like a cinema adventure: ‘The Italian Job’. On the last weekend in August, the classic cars wound their way through St. Moritz and over the mountain passes of the Upper Engadine, with a stop-off in Tirano, Italy, and five regularity tests along the route.

Of course, all the big names in Italian motoring were represented: Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia. But just as much attention was paid to those smaller marques that have shaped Italian motoring history without ever becoming global conglomerates. Anyone leafing through the list of participants would have found a 1965 Iso Rivolta A3C Corsa alongside a 1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada, with an Osca 1600 GT Coupé Touring and an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Zagato in between. And since the Italian way of life isn’t defined solely by supercars, a 1995 Fiat Panda naturally found its place amongst the powerhouses such as the Ferrari F40 and the Lancia Stratos.

Incidentally, the cars were not judged whilst stationary on the grass, as is the case at many concours events. Under the name ‘Eleganza in Movimento’, a jury led by former Pininfarina chief designer Lorenzo Ramaciotti assessed the cars whilst they were in motion on the mountain roads around St. Moritz. After all, a car only reveals its true character when it is driving, when the engine is running and it becomes one with the road.

So what is it that makes these cars so fascinating to this day? The answer probably lies in the era from which they originate: in the 1950s and 1960s, designers such as Bertone, Zagato and Pininfarina sketched car bodies by hand, curve by curve, without wind tunnels or computer simulations. The result was designs that, even 70 years on, have lost none of their impact – one need only think of the 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Zagato or the 1966 Lancia Flaminia Super Sport Zagato. These cars were guided less by regulations than by ideas. What is evident is the courage to simply let a design be beautiful, without it having to justify itself to a marketing department.

The list of participants demonstrated in two ways just how much this spirit is still alive today: Alongside the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB, St. Moritz also hosted a brand-new Ferrari Amalfi, built in 2026, and the Kimera EVO37 in its Martini livery – a modern re-creation of a Group B classic. Italy’s design heritage does not simply reside in museums; it is out on the road. And it continues to find worthy successors even in the 21st century.

Incidentally, the date for the next edition of Passione Engadina has already been set: next year, classic cars will once again gather in St. Moritz on the last weekend of August, from 26 to 29 August 2027.
