Codename Cool

GMT-Master II. Submariner. Daytona. All perfectly straightforward names. But some models have a second, unofficial name – Batman, Panda or John Player Special, for example. Welcome to the universe of unofficial nicknames.

These monikers have long since become part of the Rolex universe, as collectors’ jargon, shorthand for connoisseurs, codes with meaning. Sometimes the name refers to the watch’s color. Sometimes it was coined in honor of a famous wearer or even a television series. What happens when when fans start naming their favorit watches.

Batman
When ref. 116710BLNR was launched in 2013, nobody was talking about superheroes – until someone noticed the colors. Black and blue, like the Dark Knight. And so the nickname “Batman” was born. It was the first GMT-Master II with a twotone Cerachrom ceramic bezel – a genuine technical feat.
Blueberry
The “Blueberry” is not an official model, but a rare variant of the GMT-Master ref. 1675, usually made for military customers. Its bezel is entirely blue. Very few were produced, and many fake bezels are in circulation. Anyone who owns a genuine example holds a very rare collector’s piece.
Rolex nicknames are more than just a bit of fun – they are codes, stories and part of collector culture.

Coke
The GMT-Master II with the “Coke” bezel first appeared in 1983 as ref. 16760. The nickname is obvious – the colors recall the Coca-Cola logo. It was the first GMT-Master II with an independently adjustable hour hand and the then-new, thicker case, which also earned it the nickname “Fat Lady”. Compared with the “Pepsi”, the Coke came across as slightly more masculine. A more modern version followed with ref. 16710A and the slimmer caliber 3185. In 2005, the Coke was discontinued for the time being. To this day (as of January 2026), there is still no ceramic Coke variant – a fact that only fuels demand.
Hulk
Green was never subtle. And yet the nickname “Hulk” for the Rolex Submariner ref. 116610LV is an affectionate exaggeration. It refers to the model with green dial and green Cerachrom bezel, introduced in 2010. Its predecessor, the 16610LV (“Kermit”), paired a green aluminum bezel with a black dial. Technically a Submariner like any other – but visually, a statement.
